The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a national-level entrance exam conducted annually for admission to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programs offered by 22 National Law Universities (NLUs) in India. Apart from NLUs, many private law colleges and universities also accept CLAT scores for admissions.

2. Eligibility Criteria

For UG (LL.B) Program:

    • General/OBC/PwD/NRI/PIO/OCI candidates: At least 45%
    • SC/ST candidates: At least 40%
  • Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for the UG program.

3. Paper Pattern

For UG (LL.B) Program:

  • Type of Questions: Objective type (Multiple Choice Questions)
  • Total Questions: 120 questions (reduced from 150 in previous years)
  • Total Marks: 120 marks
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Marking Scheme:
    • +1 mark for each correct answer
    • -0.25 for each incorrect answer

For UG (LL.B) Program:

The UG CLAT paper is designed to test comprehension and reasoning abilities, along with knowledge of current events and legal reasoning. The sections are:

  • English Language: 22-26 questions
  • Current Affairs (including General Knowledge): 28-32 questions
  • Legal Reasoning: 28-32 questions
  • Logical Reasoning: 22-26 questions
  • Quantitative Techniques (Mathematics): 10-14 questions

5. Syllabus

For UG (LL.B) Program:

  • English Language: Reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, inference-based questions
  • Current Affairs & General Knowledge: Important national and international events, arts and culture, international affairs, historical and legal events
  • Legal Reasoning: Legal propositions and facts, legal principles, case-based passages
  • Logical Reasoning: Argument patterns, premises, conclusions, assumptions, and inferences
  • Quantitative Techniques: Basic mathematics, arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data interpretation

The total seats available for the UG program across NLUs vary each year but generally range between 2,500-3,000.

  • CLAT Consortium: The CLAT exam is conducted by the Consortium of NLUs, which was formed in 2017 to streamline the exam process. The consortium also handles the counselling and admission process.

All India Law Entrance Test (AILET)

The All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) is a national-level entrance exam conducted by National Law University, Delhi (NLU Delhi), for admission to its undergraduate (B.A. LL.B.), postgraduate (LL.M.), and Ph.D. law programs. NLU Delhi is one of the top law schools in India, and AILET is conducted exclusively for admissions to this institution.
 

Eligibility Criteria for AILET 2025

For B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Program:

  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed the Senior Secondary School Examination (10+2) or equivalent with at least 45% marks (40% for SC/ST/PwD candidates).
  • Appearing Candidates: Those appearing for their qualifying exam (10+2) can also apply, but they must meet the required qualifications at the time of admission.
  • Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for AILET B.A. LL.B. applicants.

Exam Pattern for AILET

AILET B.A. LL.B. Exam Pattern:

  • Mode of Exam: Offline, Pen-and-Paper Test.
  • Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes (90 minutes).
  • Total Questions: 150 questions.
  • Total Marks: 150 marks.
  • Subjects & Marks Distribution:
    1. English Language: 50 questions (50 marks).
    2. Current Affairs & General Knowledge: 30 questions (30 marks).
    3. Logical Reasoning: 70 questions (70 marks).

There is no section on Legal Aptitude in AILET. Logical Reasoning focuses on legal principles.

  • Marking Scheme:

    • -0.25 marks deducted for each incorrect answer.
